Established in 1998 by neurological physiotherapist Nikki Penny, The Clinic provides specialist physiotherapy rehabilitation for individuals with Neurological conditions including Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Head Injuries, Parkinson’s, Spinal injuries and other conditions affecting the brain and the spinal cord.
Our clinic aims to deliver physical programmes that are progressive and are designed to maximise the patients’ mobility and fitness levels. Our results at the clinic are derived from a shared partnership between patient and practitioner. Patient goals are quickly and clearly identified whilst a suitable pathway, clinically reasoned, is designed to achieve desired outcomes.
“ The aim of working with a neurological physiotherapist is to help you move with more efficiency and ease, to enable your body to better function and to enhance your life. If we keep demanding, change will eventually occur in our bodies “
Neurophysiotherapy is a specialist form of physiotherapy dedicated to improving the function of patients who have suffered an injury or disease affecting their central nervous system.
It’s the job of the Neurological Physiotherapist to assess the individual and to use their extensive skills and knowledge of tone, joints and movement to help the patient move with more efficiency and ease. Does the patient require larger progressions such as learning to walk again, or is it small fine movements that need attention? This will be determined by our specialist Neurological Physiotherapists on an initial appointment.
The purpose of the first appointment is to gain a full understanding of how the patient moves, allowing us to formulate a special movement based programme tailored to their individual needs. This appointment also gives us our first opportunity to understand who the patient is, and how their neurological condition has an impact on their life.
More recently the first appointment has been split into two sections. The first 30 minutes is a virtual appointment, delivered over Zoom with one of our specialist neurological physiotherapists. We will ask lots of questions with the aim of finding out as much about the patient as possible. We will cover their medical history, health and fitness related goals, personal aspirations, exercise history etc.
The second section, lasting for 60 minutes is a face to face appointment at either of our clinics, Hurst or Hove, or a home visit. The purpose of this session is to complete a movement assessment. Upon completion, the neurophysiotherapist will formulate a pathway to move forward. This could include a burst of one to one neurological physiotherapy sessions, advice on independent exercise programmes, and placement in one of the clinics appropriate exercise groups.
